Using the Library

Walk-in Hours:

Our public walk-in hours are open to everyone and provide access to legal research tools, reference materials, and other library
resources. While our staff is available to guide you in using these resources, please note that we cannot offer legal advice or interpret the law.
Outside of walk-in hours, our team continues to support the community by providing remote services via phone and email. We’re here to help you navigate your legal research needs—whether in person or from a distance.

Our Collection:

We have a small print collection that consists of mostly California materials. Our collection includes CEB publications, Rutter Group publications and various other treatises. Our catalog can be searched through the Santa Cruz Public Libraries Catalog at https://www.santacruzpl.org/ If you have questions about whether or not a particular item is in our collection, please call or email.

Thanks to grants from the California Council of County Law Librarians we have been able to keep our collection current despite revenue decreases. We are grateful for the support provided to us over the last four years.

Need Help with Legal Research?

Reference assistance is available—our staff is here to guide you in using library resources. If you have questions or need support, feel free to reach out during public walk-in hours or contact us by phone or email. We’re happy to help!

Informational Packets

Our library offers information packets with  instructions for many commonly asked-about legal procedures. These guides are tailored specifically for filing in Santa Cruz County and include forms and requirements to help you navigate the process. There is a nominal fee charged for all packets.

Computers for Legal Research

The library provides four public computers for legal research and the creation of legal documents. A one-hour time limit is enforced when others are waiting. To ensure fair access, users may be asked to give up their station if not actively engaged in legal research.

Legal Databases Available In-House

Access powerful legal research tools on our public computers, including Westlaw, Legal Information Reference Center (also available remotely), and XSpouse. These resources are available for in-library use to support your legal research, case preparation, and family law calculations. Staff can assist with navigation, but cannot provide legal advice.

Printing and Copying Services

Copiers and computer printouts are available at $0.20 per page, per side. Our copier is not coin-operated—staff will be happy to assist you with logging in to make copies. You can also print directly to our printer using its dedicated Wi-Fi network. Let us know if you need help getting connected or started!

Library Tours

The staff will provide tours of the library upon request. Advance notice is recommended. Tours for groups of four or more may be scheduled after regular business hours.
